The Guggenheim galleries are home to the incredible art collections owned by the late Peggy Guggenheim. From Venice to Las Vegas, they are a must for any art lover or tourist. The latest addition to the Guggenheim museum family comes in the form of an ambitious project from designer Frank Gehry.

Located in Abu Dhabi, the new Guggenhaim Museum has just received the go ahead for construction.

The initial designs for the project were released over a decade ago. This is a long awaited addition to Abu Dhabi and the Guggenheim museum.

This will be the largest Guggenheim museum in the world spanning 42,000 square meters. According to the director of the foundation, though we all know construction timelines are subject to change, the project is expected to take around four years to complete.

Funding for construction has come from the Abu Dhabi Tourism Development & Investment Company. This means that whilst the Guggenheim Foundation will be in charge of the running of the museum, the Abu Dhabi TDIC will own the property.

The museum will be based close to the Abu Dhabi Louvre in the hopes of creating a cultural hub within the UAE capital, just off the coast. A beautiful location for such a highly regarded art foundation.

In the not too distant future it is hoped that this area will also be home to a national UAE museum and a performing arts centre.

The design for the structure is truly magnificent. The curvature of each section is beautifully elegant and really creates a sense of majesty. The golden hues of the materials against the soft blues of the sea are a wonderful combination.

Interestingly, construction did technically make a start during 2011, four years after the initial designs were unveiled. Several concrete pillars were poured but there has been no further work on the project until now.

This is an ambitious and creative project which will create a real boom for the Abu Dhabi economy and cultural experience.
