Can the Tech Industry Change the Image of Construction?

As creative and dynamic as the construction industry is, we still have an image problem. It’s a tale as old as time. Construction has always been seen as a boys club and an industry afraid of change. Even with the incredible developments in sustainability, accessibility and innovation, we have a long way to go.

It’s not all doom and gloom for us though!

Construction has always been seen as a boys club. Can the construction industry learn from the progressive changes in the tech industry over the last few years?

Women represent roughly 15% of the construction and tech workforce. The difference between the two?

The tech industry has seen the amount of women workers double in recent years, whereas the construction industry has seen growth of barely 1% year on year.

But! Women are making noise and demanding to be heard and there is more and more emphasis being put on encouraging and empowering women in to industries like technology and construction. Organisations like Women into Construction are a huge part of this.

If the rate of women in tech can grow this fast, then maybe the tech industry will start to have a positive impact on the amount of women in construction. Yes please!

This is just one of the ways in which tech could be changing the way people view the construction industry.

More creative thinking is having an impact on efficiency.

We all know the sitcom trope: Builders take forever to complete even simple tasks. Whilst we know this isn't exactly the case, there are a number of factors which will effect the timeliness of a project. But, we also know there are improvements which can be made when it comes to supply deliveries and planning on larger projects.

The tech industry is finding new and groundbreaking ways to change how we look at project management and streamlining.

Of course, the most famous example of this is everybody’s favourite: BIM!

BIM is the technological innovation that combines every aspect of the construction process and allows individual members of each part of a project to make their changes remotely without the need for chasing every other department. For instance, Do you need to change the size of the windows on the 5th floor? No problem. Update the spec within the program and this will update every interconnected part of the project on the shared program.

BIM takes on the life cycle of a project from its conception to it’s demolition and everything in between.

More efficient planning and execution means saving you and your project valuable time and money.

Sustainability is the next area of construction to be positively impacted by the tech industry.

The image of construction is often as being at the forefront of pollution and global warming. With energy guzzling processes like huge concrete pours it can be hard to shrug off this image. Could the tech industry do anything to help us?

Solar panels and wind farms are taking over house building and it is fantastic to see. With tech giants like Tesla investing in the development of more efficient sustainable energy sources, the future is bright for the involvement of tech in construction sustainability.

Tesla have even invented solar roof tiles that are shaped like regular roof tiles for a chic and modern design for new houses. Great for the planet and great to look at? We’ll take a million, thank you!

"It is fantastic to see solar power taking over house building!"

Combining new research in sustainability and efficient tech, we can work hard on more energy efficient designs. Extending this to sustainable fuels and ways to recycle old construction materials and even rubbish.

We have a long way to go, both within tech and the construction industry, but that’s what makes our work so exciting.
