There are so many ways that various industries can cut down their carbon footprint. The world needs construction and transport to be leading the way when we think about sustainability. Without fuel efficient and green construction and transportation, our domestic efforts mean little to nothing.
With that in mind, is IKEA Greenwich leading the way for retail?
One of the most hotly anticipated retail launches in the UK, IKEA Greenwich is a vast complex with everything you’ve come to love about the Swedish giant. With one added extra: An Outstanding BREEAM rating!
Only 320 other buildings in the UK hold this prestigious sustainable title. This is also the highest sustainability rating of any IKEA in the world. A massive achievement.
IKEA are one of many companies desperate to cut their impact on the planet.
"Only 320 other buildings in the UK hold an Outstanding BREEAM rating."
Helen Aylett, Store Manager at IKEA Greenwich, said: “Achieving ‘Outstanding’ BREEAM certification is a huge step in our commitment to have a positive impact on the environment, the local community and our customers. The wide range of sustainable and innovative features that IKEA Greenwich offers are a great way to inform and encourage our customers to take small steps to live more sustainably, whilst we strive to have a positive impact on the local environment.”
The 22nd full sized IKEA opened in the UK, the store is equipped with features as simple as multiple large windows meaning the store relies on less electric light. This seemingly minor detail can make a huge difference to a projects sustainability.
As well as this the materials used in the project are from sustainable sources, and some even have the ability to harvest rainwater!
Sustainable construction doesn’t just belong in office and house building.
Shamir Ghumra, Director of BREEAM at BRE said: “We are delighted that IKEA Greenwich has achieved the highest BREEAM UK New Construction Outstanding rating by a retail unit to date. BREEAM is the world’s leading building design certification and our aim is to drive excellence in sustainable building practices. IKEA’s 90.44% score reflects this. It’s a testament to the company’s ongoing commitment to sustainability practices of the highest standard, for the benefit of all.”
